Description

Sir Matthew Hale SL (1609 — 1676) was an influential English barrister, judge and jurist who was widely respected during his lifetime by Royalists and Republicans at a time of great upheaval in England. As a barrister, Hale represented a variety of Royalist figures during the prelude and duration of the English Civil War, and it’s believed Hale was to represent Charles I at his trial and conceived the defense Charles used. Hale’s reputation for integrity and his political neutrality saved him from any repercussions, and Oliver Cromwell made him a Justice of the Common Pleas.

Today Hale is best remembered for his writings on English Common Law, and Analysis of the Common Law is noted as the first published history of English law and a strong influence on William Blackstone's Commentaries on the Laws of England. Blackstone became the principal author on which the colonists rested their legal foundations during the formation of the United States.

This edition of Hale’s History of the Common Law of England is specially formatted with a Table of Contents.
